We spend so much of our time stuck in the "real world," filling our days with adult responsibilities. But do you remember jumping on the furniture pretending the floor was lava? Mounting a broom and galloping into the horizon? Looking up at the sky and imagining a hare leaping over the moon?

I've been seeing the word "whimsical" everywhere lately. To me it's just another word for dreamer.

I was an English teacher in Brazil for years. My youngest students were three years old. At that age, everything feels possible, nothing is too big to imagine. My oldest student was eighty-nine. He was a singer, tired of being asked to perform songs he didn't know, and he decided it was time to learn. He showed up to my class with a dream and a whole lot of determination. Dreamers come in all ages, I guess.

So dream a little. Sit in your backyard. Look up at the sky. Let your mind wander.

And in case it's a cloudy night, I'm sending you your own moon this month. Spin it, and let it answer your questions. I also tucked in a recipe for my favorite Brazilian carrot cake, bright orange, nothing like the American version, and the kind of thing that takes me straight back to being that kid on the swing chair.

I used to spend hours in my backyard as a kid. My parents ran a restaurant right next to our house, and the backyard was the quietest place I could find. I'd curl up on the swing chair with a book or a comic, and somewhere between the pages I'd stop and look up at the sky. We lived far enough from the city to see the stars at night, and I'd sit there in the summer breeze, finding shapes in the moon, asking it questions, imagining whole fantastical worlds up there. Sometimes I'd fall asleep out there, and my mom would have to come outside and carry me in.

People see shapes in clouds. I always saw mine among the stars. And to this day, looking up at the sky still brings that same feeling.
